The redevelopment of the 3.5-kilometre stretch of Palma's Paseo Marítimo has received the national Saint-Gobain Sustainable Construction Award. The project was recognised for prioritising pedestrians, renaturalising an urban area - including the planting of over 1,800 trees - and integrating the port with the city.
The award acknowledges the effort to transform the front line into "an accessible, green environment focused on the public, strengthening the integration between the port and the city, and raising environmental sustainability standards at the Port of Palma".
The project stretched from the Porto Pi roundabout to Avda. Argentina and involved an investment of over 50 million euros. Among the key measures, the Balearic Ports Authority highlighted the reduction of traffic lanes - from three to four down to two in each direction - and the expansion of space for pedestrians, bicycle lanes, and green areas, which now account for 70% of the total surface area.
