Guwahati, Oct 26: The Government of India is considering a proposal to designate Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati as an authorized export center for agarwood, a move expected to eliminate major logistical bottlenecks and accelerate Assam’s access to global markets.
Making the announcement on Monday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that the absence of direct export recognition at Guwahati Airport has long created challenges for local trade. A formal approval from the Central Government would streamline shipments and unlock the international potential of the state’s agarwood sector.
The announcement came during the flag-off ceremony of a 123-kg consignment of premium agarwood chips bound for Dubai, UAE, held in front of Lok Sewa Bhawan in Dispur. The shipment marks the second major international export from the state under the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative, which targets the economic expansion of Golaghat district’s famed agarwood industry.
Speaking to reporters, CM Sarma emphasized Assam’s dominance in the sector, noting that the state houses nearly 12 crore agarwood plants and accounts for approximately 81% of India’s total agarwood production.

Congratulating the MGI Group for facilitating the shipment to the UAE, the Chief Minister expressed optimism that this consignment is just the beginning of a larger trade surge. He reaffirmed that establishing direct export clearance from Guwahati will pave the way for a major rise in agarwood exports from Assam in the coming days.
