A Dhaka court has rejected the bail petition of former Major Akhtaruzzaman, who was arrested in a case filed over creating disorder at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, obstructing government work and physically assaulting an on-duty security official.
The order was passed on Monday (October 26) by Judge Sadekin Habib Bappy of the Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-5 after hearing the bail petition filed by the defence.
Advocates Shishir Monir, Abdur Razzaq and several other lawyers sought bail for Akhtaruzzaman. The prosecution opposed the petition. After hearing both sides, the court rejected his bail plea.
Earlier, on the evening of October 2, Detective Branch (DB) police arrested him from his residence in the Dhaka Cantonment area. The following day, a court granted police one day of remand for questioning.
According to the case statement, passengers became frustrated on October 1 over a delay in receiving their luggage from a flight (BG-338) arriving from Medina, Saudi Arabia.
At one point, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad arrived at the scene to bring the situation under control.
The complaint alleges that former Major Akhtaruzzaman verbally abused the airport executive director, pushed him by the neck towards the exit and threatened to beat him. He also allegedly made derogatory remarks about the Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister.
Although Akhtaruzzaman had been involved in Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) politics for a long time, he joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami ahead of the 13th parliamentary election in 2026. The BNP had expelled him for the fifth time in 2022.
