China’s AI Bubble Has Burst In China. Here’s How You’ll Be Affected

The mainland STAR50 index, which tracks China's leading semiconductor and artificial intelligence firms, has tumbled 40% in less than four months, according to Reuters.

The sharp sell-off wiped out roughly USD480 billion (RM1.96 trillion) in market value, sending jitters through regional stock markets and derailing Beijing's efforts to channel household savings into domestic technology equities.

China's broader blue-chip CSI300 index has also slipped 20% from its June peak, stalling state efforts to build a steady, long-term capital market.

Market observers noted that the rally had gradually become detached from underlying business performance.

"The stock market later evolved into a speculative crazy bull," said Beijing-based fund manager Dong Baozhen.

"And now we see the bubble bursting."

Analysts attribute the sharp correction to stretched price-to-earnings multiples, corporate tax deadlines, and mounting US regulatory threats to block Chinese hardware from overseas data centres.

With artificial intelligence enterprises accounting for 42% of China's overall equity capitalisation and 57% of total trading turnover across mainland A-shares and Hong Kong H-shares, retail investors have borne the brunt of the decline.

Despite the sell-off, the STAR50 still trades around 100 times trailing earnings, compared with a ratio of 30 for the Nasdaq 100. This valuation gap has left investors wary of further volatility.

First, your retirement savings and investment funds could take an indirect hit. Large institutional managers and private unit trusts often have diversified exposure to Greater China and broader emerging market equities.

A sustained slump in China's technology stocks could weigh on overseas portfolio returns, potentially affecting dividend distributions for local savers.

Second, the downturn could influence local employment and tech manufacturing. Malaysia plays a central role in global semiconductor testing and packaging.

If Chinese tech giants slash capital expenditure or face supply disruptions, local automated test equipment (ATE) and outsourced assembly firms listed on Bursa Malaysia could experience temporary order slowdowns.

Consumers could also see some price relief. As Chinese manufacturers grapple with domestic overcapacity and shrinking margins, intense price competition could lower retail prices for consumer hardware, smart gadgets, and household electronics across Malaysian retail shelves.
