Ebola has reached Nigeria, and Cameroon, Benin and Madagascar are tightening health checks before any case arrives. None of the three has recorded a case so far.
The Ebola outbreak in Nigeria, confirmed on Tuesday 20 October 2026, has put its neighbours and far-off Madagascar on alert. Cameroon, Benin and Madagascar are tightening health checks, and none of them has recorded a case.
Ebola is a deadly virus that spreads through contact with the body fluids of sick people. For US readers it matters because Nigeria is a major air hub and this strain has no approved vaccine.
The Ebola Outbreak in Nigeria So Far
Nigeria confirmed on Tuesday 20 October that a woman in Abuja, the capital, had tested positive for Bundibugyo Ebola. The World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations health agency, says she had recently arrived from Uganda; investigators are still tracing her full travel history.
The WHO says she is in isolation after seeking care at a private clinic in Abuja. Congo, formally the Democratic Republic of the Congo, declared the outbreak on Friday 15 May 2026.
Nigeria is the fifth country to detect the virus, after Congo, Uganda, France and Kenya. Bundibugyo is a rare Ebola species with no approved vaccine or specific treatment, the WHO says.
Cameroon Calls Its Preparedness Insufficient
Cameroon shares more than 2,000 kilometres (about 1,240 miles) of land and sea border with Nigeria, with daily trade and direct flights. Public Health Minister Malachie Manaouda said on Thursday 22 October that Cameroon has no case but a very high risk.
A crisis meeting in Yaoundé, the capital, judged preparedness insufficient and set seven priorities, including hospital alerts and stronger border controls. Manaouda will submit a budgeted plan to Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute.
Benin Moves to Pre-Alert
Benin moved to a pre-alert phase on Wednesday 21 October. Health Minister Benjamin Hounkpatin inspected Cotonou airport, where thermal cameras now scan arrivals, and the government says Benin has no case.
Why Madagascar Watches Travellers From Kenya
Kenya, not Nigeria, is the reason, because it announced a fatal imported case on Tuesday 6 October. Kenya now has nine confirmed cases and one death as of 20 October, all in one cluster.
An unnamed health ministry source said five direct flights a week link Madagascar to Kenya, so the danger is imminent. Arrivals from Kenya fill in a health form at Ivato airport in Antananarivo, the capital, and get 21 days of follow-up.
The same source said 500 to 600 passengers arrive weekly on that route and the ministry has no facilities to quarantine them. Staff phone them often, while travellers from Congo face a mandatory 21-day quarantine in requisitioned hotels.
Africa’s Health Agency Calls Ministers Together
A news agency reports that Africa CDC, the African Union‘s health agency, invited ministers to a virtual meeting on Wednesday 28 October. It quotes director general Jean Kaseya, who said Ebola now affects three regions of Africa; no second source was found.
The WHO counted 9,704 confirmed cases and 4,687 deaths as of 20 October, almost all in Congo. The WHO urges readiness but advises against travel or trade bans.
What It Means for US Readers
On Thursday 21 May the US ordered travellers from Congo, Uganda and South Sudan to enter through Washington Dulles airport for screening. No opened source shows it still applies or covers Nigeria, or shows a US travel ban tied to Nigeria.
Travellers to Nigeria, Cameroon, Benin or Kenya should check notices from the CDC and the State Department before flying. Companies with staff in Abuja or Lagos should expect extra airport health checks.
What Prediction Markets Say
Traders on Polymarket, a prediction market, bet 2.5% that the WHO calls Ebola a pandemic in 2026 (26 October, 3:05 p.m. ET). The bet pays only if the WHO uses the word pandemic officially.
Another bet gives 22.5% for a case in the Republic of the Congo, which borders Cameroon. Volume is about US$789,000 on the first bet and US$17,000 on this one.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
What Is Not Known
It is not known where the Nigerian patient caught the virus, and the WHO says investigators are still reconstructing her travel. Case totals change daily, so the figures here are the WHO count as of 20 October.
Madagascar’s flight and passenger figures come from unnamed ministry sources and are not independently checked. The Africa CDC meeting and Kaseya’s remarks rest on one news agency text, and the outcome is unknown.
What Comes Next
One news agency says Africa CDC ministers meet on Wednesday 28 October. An outbreak ends only after 42 days with no new case.
