Israel has launched a massive 48-hour military exercise involving multiple divisions and air force units to prepare for surprise attacks and cross-border infiltrations, amid rising tensions with Iran and renewed concerns over the possibility of a conflict similar to the 1973 Yom Kippur War.According to Fox News, the exercise focuses on strengthening Israel's readiness for attacks across multiple fronts, with military planners drawing lessons from past intelligence failures and the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack. The drills come amid heightened regional tensions, following a reported Iranian ballistic missile exercise and days before Israel's October 27 national election. The exercise involves the Israeli military's northern command's 210th division, the west bank division and the central command's 98th and 96th divisions, alongside the Israeli Air Force.
The drills are designed to test the military's response to surprise attacks, cross-border infiltrations by land and air, and threats emerging across multiple fronts.IDF Chief of Staff Lt General Eyal Zamir warned that the risk of escalation had increased amid security concerns across multiple fronts.During a visit to the military's Central Command, Zamir said, "Given the numerous warnings across all fronts and the sensitivity of the current period, the potential for escalation has increased."
He added that Israeli forces had reinforced deployments in several areas to strengthen operational readiness and security. The drills come days after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reportedly conducted a ballistic missile exercise, adding to concerns over a possible escalation between Tehran and Jerusalem. Israeli military preparations are also being closely watched ahead of the country's October 27 election, with security officials concerned that regional adversaries could exploit the sensitive political period. Why the 1973 Yom Kippur War still haunts IsraelThe comparison with the 1973 Yom Kippur War centres on how military exercises and troop movements can mask preparations for an actual attack. On October 6, 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a coordinated offensive against Israel on two fronts, with Egyptian forces crossing the Suez Canal and Syrian troops advancing into the Golan Heights. Israeli intelligence had received indications of unusual military activity but failed to correctly assess the likelihood and timing of the attack.Israeli national security analyst Dr Ehud Eilam told Fox News that Egypt and Syria had conducted a major exercise before the war, helping conceal their military preparations. He warned that the current confrontation carries a similar risk of miscalculation, as Israel and Iran closely monitor each other's military movements and suspect the other could strike first. In 1973, the failure to interpret warning signs correctly left Israel vulnerable in the opening phase of the war.The current drills are intended to improve readiness against surprise attacks and infiltrations, incorporating lessons from both the 1973 war and the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led assault.
