The Judiciary is scheduled to deliver a judgment on Monday in a lawsuit filed against the Ministry of Defence by victims of the November 2024 armed confrontation at the residence of former intelligence chief, General Akol Koor, in Juba.
According to a media invitation, the judgment will be delivered at 9:00 AM at the Judiciary Headquarters.
The case stems from a deadly gunfight on November 21, 2024, at Gen. Akol Koor’s residence in the Tongpiny residential area, involving members of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) assigned to guard the former spy chief.
The confrontation reportedly erupted following a disagreement between security personnel guarding the residence and forces deployed to relocate Gen. Akol to another residence.
The incident left four people dead, including two soldiers and two civilians, according to the army spokesperson, Major General Lul Ruai Koang. The two civilians were reportedly crushed by an armoured personnel carrier during the clashes.
Eye Radio also reported that two law students were killed in the crossfire, according to Member of Parliament Mary Nyarieka Lorjok, who raised the deaths in Parliament on November 25, 2024. She said one woman was also injured in the incident.
In a separate report, Juba Teaching Hospital confirmed receiving ten civilians wounded during the clashes. The hospital said some of the patients had sustained bullet injuries, including wounds to the abdomen, before being transferred to Juba Military Hospital for further treatment.
The incident sparked public concern and calls for accountability, with lawmakers urging authorities to investigate the deaths and establish responsibility for the violence.
Following the confrontation, President Salva Kiir established an investigation committee to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, assess casualties and property damage, and make recommendations.
The army also urged injured civilians, families of those killed and people whose property was damaged to report to military headquarters with supporting documents as part of the inquiry.
The lawsuit against the Ministry of Defence is expected to address claims arising from the incident.
