Bitcoin slipped below $80,000 on October 26, 2026, falling as much as 1.4% to an intraday low around $79,300 before clawing back to roughly $80,000-$80,300.
The trigger did not come from inside crypto. It came from Wall Street’s growing unease with artificial intelligence stocks, and Bitcoin got caught in the crossfire.
A tech problem with a crypto price tag
A broad risk-off mood swept global markets, led by a sell-off in AI-related equities. Investors have started asking harder questions about tech valuations and the eye-watering sums companies are pouring into AI.
The clearest sign of nervous money came from US spot Bitcoin ETFs. These funds recorded $772.4 million in net outflows across October 23-24, 2026, a sharp turn from the inflows they had been posting before.
One of those days accounted for an estimated $635-636 million in withdrawals on its own. That makes it the largest single-day exit from the products since June 2026.
Leverage makes everything louder
Leveraged liquidations tied to Bitcoin and Ether topped $400 million in a short window as the dip unfolded.
Notably, the damage stayed relatively contained. Bitcoin has shown some resilience to concerns specifically about AI-related debt, even as it remains sensitive to the broader mood.
The macro calendar is crowded
The Federal Reserve is scheduled to meet on October 27-28, 2026, and markets tend to get cautious in the days before a central bank decision.
Traders also have other variables on their radar. Oil prices and the upcoming US midterm elections are both feeding into the broader uncertainty that has investors hedging their bets.
According to the CoinDesk reporting cited in the research, Bitcoin’s price behavior has increasingly merged with traditional market movements.
Background: the cost of going mainstream
Spot Bitcoin ETFs opened the door for pension funds, advisers and everyday brokerage customers to hold Bitcoin without touching a crypto exchange. The trade-off is that those same investors bring their habits with them. When they rotate out of tech, they often rotate out of Bitcoin at the same time, because both sit in the same mental folder labeled “growth and risk.”
The latest outflows show that dynamic in action. Weekend ETF flows that might once have been a footnote are now a primary driver of price, and a reversal from inflows to outflows can set the tone for days.
What this means for traders and investors
The immediate question is whether the ETF exodus continues. A single large outflow day can reflect positioning ahead of a major event like a Fed meeting. A sustained streak would suggest something more durable: a genuine cooling of institutional appetite.
The more than $400 million in liquidations flushed out a chunk of overextended positions. It also signals that traders may still be too aggressive for a choppy macro backdrop.
Bitcoin’s correlation with equities, and with tech in particular, appears to be tightening. It means portfolio exposure to AI stocks and Bitcoin may not offset each other the way some holders assumed. In a broad sell-off, both could fall together.
The relative resilience Bitcoin has shown to AI debt fears suggests the market is distinguishing, at least somewhat, between assets directly exposed to AI spending and those simply sharing a risk label.
