Harrison Smith has spent much of his NFL career making quarterbacks regret throwing in his direction. On Sunday, he added another quarterback to that list.
The Minnesota Vikings safety intercepted Daniel Jones in the closing moments of a 16-10 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, securing another win for the NFL's remaining unbeaten team. Minnesota improved to 6-0, but the interception carried an additional meaning.
It was the 40th of Smith's NFL career.
That milestone placed the veteran safety in an extraordinarily exclusive group of defensive players who have combined at least 40 interceptions with 20 sacks. For a player who considered retirement before returning for his 15th season, Sunday's performance provided another memorable chapter.
A remarkable achievement in year 15
Smith has been one of Minnesota's most dependable defensive players for more than a decade. His longevity is impressive enough, but the combination of interceptions and sacks highlights something even more unusual about his career.

Most defensive backs specialize in coverage and creating turnovers. Others become particularly effective as blitzers near the line of scrimmage. Smith has spent his career contributing in both areas.
His 40th interception put him in a group that includes Pro Football Hall of Famers Ronde Barber, Larry Wilson and Charles Woodson.
The milestone came in Smith's 213th regular-season appearance.
He also became one of the few players in Vikings history to reach 40 interceptions, moving into a tie for third place on the franchise's all-time list.
Only Paul Krause and Bobby Bryant have recorded more interceptions for Minnesota. Smith's latest takeaway wasn't simply another entry in a record book. It was the play that ended Indianapolis' final opportunity to steal a victory.
Minnesota needed its defense again
The Vikings didn't produce a particularly explosive offensive performance Sunday. Quarterback Kyler Murray threw for 150 yards and a touchdown, while Justin Jefferson finished with four receptions for 44 yards. Minnesota trailed for much of the afternoon before taking its first lead early in the fourth quarter.
Murray connected with T.J. Hockenson for a five-yard touchdown, giving the Vikings a 13-10 advantage. Will Reichard later added a 52-yard field goal to extend the lead to six points with less than two minutes remaining.
That left Indianapolis with one final opportunity.
Smith made sure it didn't last long. His interception ended the Colts' comeback hopes and allowed Minnesota to finish another close victory.
The performance also highlighted the work of linebacker Blake Cashman, who recorded 12 tackles and two sacks while helping the Vikings pressure Jones throughout the afternoon.

Another unusual record came from Minnesota's kicker
Smith wasn't the only Viking making history. Reichard connected on a 47-yard field goal during the first half, extending his streak to 36 consecutive successful attempts. That broke the franchise record of 35 straight field goals established by Gary Anderson in 1998.
Reichard later added the important 52-yarder that provided Minnesota with its final margin of victory.
For a team that continues finding ways to win close games, dependable special teams and experienced defensive play have become essential ingredients.
The Vikings remain unbeaten despite an offense that hasn't always looked spectacular. That's what makes Sunday's result so interesting.
Minnesota didn't need a huge passing performance or an overwhelming rushing attack. It needed a veteran safety to make one more important play. And after 15 NFL seasons, Smith was ready to deliver it.
