MELAKA: Datuk Azman Abidin will prioritise identifying and resolving outstanding issues in Paya Rumput after being named as the candidate for the state seat last Saturday.
Azman, who is the Prime Minister's political secretary, said he recognised that every constituency had its own challenges, including problems that might not have been fully resolved by the previous assemblyman during the five-year term.
He said identifying outstanding issues was important to finding solutions and improving areas that still required attention.
"Everywhere, there are issues raised by the people, and we acknowledge that the previous assemblyman has played his role.
"Some issues may not have been resolved because not everything can be settled within five years.
"God willing, I will try to find solutions to any outstanding issues and improve the situation," he said after the closing ceremony of Minggu Melaka Ceria at Padang Dewan Bunga Tanjung, Tanjung Minyak, last night.
Asked about perceptions that he was an outsider in Paya Rumput, Azman said he was from Melaka, although his family was based in Kuala Sungai Baru, Masjid Tanah.
He said not being from the constituency should not prevent him from serving its residents.
"I went to school in Melaka, and my family is from the state. I am not from Paya Rumput constituency, but from the neighbouring Masjid Tanah area.
"What matters is that we can serve the people of Paya Rumput," he said.
Azman said his decision to contest in Melaka was also driven by a desire to contribute to the state, which was linked to his family's roots.
Although he had never contested in an election before, he viewed the opportunity as a chance to serve the state.
