Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d’Or. And one number is probably enough to explain why the award ended up in his hands: 73.

That is how many goals the English striker scored for club and country during the season under consideration, from 3 August 2025 to 19 July 2026. A simply extraordinary goalscoring output, to which Kane added trophies, records and consistent performances on practically every stage.
The competition was immense. Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal both had compelling cases: the Frenchman topped several scoring charts, while the Spaniard won the World Cup. Yet looking at the entire season rather than just a few moments, the decision to reward Kane rests on foundations that are hard to dispute.
🤯 73 goals: a season OUT of the ordinary
Let’s start with the most impressive statistic. Kane scored 73 goals for Bayern Munich and England, compared with Mbappé’s 58 and Lamine Yamal’s 25. Including assists, the Englishman finished with 81 direct goal involvements, ahead of the Frenchman’s 71 and the Spaniard’s 45.
For Bayern alone, he scored 61 goals in all competitions, 19 more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues. Before Kane, that tally had not been reached since Cristiano Ronaldo’s 61 goals for Real Madrid in 2014/15. Those numbers also earned him the second European Golden Shoe of his career. But this time, they were more than just statistics.
🏆 Kane combined goals with trophies and major achievements
Bayern won the Bundesliga and German Cup, as well as the Super Cup, with Kane the undisputed focal point of their attack. Their European campaign was impressive too: the Bavarians reached the Champions League semi-finals, only bowing out to Paris Saint-Germain after a spectacular 6-5 aggregate defeat.
They went further than Yamal’s Barcelona and Mbappé’s Real Madrid, both eliminated in the quarter-finals. And this is probably one of the decisive factors behind his Ballon d’Or: Kane did not simply rack up impressive individual statistics, but translated them into a winning season for his team as well.
A change of shirt made no difference. Kane scored 12 goals for England, six of them during the 2026 World Cup, becoming England’s all-time leading scorer in the competition. The Three Lions failed to lift the trophy, but reached the semi-finals and subsequently secured third place by beating Mbappé’s France.
Once again, Kane delivered. Bayern or England, Bundesliga or World Cup: his season barely had a quiet spell.
🆚 Why Kane deserves to finish ahead of Mbappé and Yamal
It is above all the comparison with the other two leading contenders that gives weight to the verdict.
Mbappé finished with 58 goals, topping the La Liga scoring charts with 25 and the Champions League charts with 15. At the World Cup, he did even better: 10 goals and the Golden Boot, also becoming the competition’s all-time leading scorer with 22 goals overall. A phenomenal individual season, but one that lacked something fundamental: a trophy with Real Madrid or France.
It is a different story for Lamine Yamal. The Spaniard won La Liga and, above all, the World Cup, while also leading the way creatively with 20 assists, more than Mbappé’s 13 and Kane’s eight. But the Spaniard’s World Cup campaign, also affected by the muscle injury he suffered towards the end of the season with Barcelona, ended with just one goal. Overall, he registered 45 goal involvements, barely half of Kane’s 81.
Yamal, at just 19, won the biggest trophy. Kane, however, dominated individually throughout the entire season.
👑 A Ballon d’Or for consistency
And perhaps that is the best way to explain the result. The Ballon d’Or does not exclusively reward whoever lifts the most prestigious trophy; it must take the entire season’s performances into account. Kane’s, as discussed and analysed, were impressive in both output and consistency.
Ultimately, one statistic captures the extraordinary nature of Kane’s season better than any other. Before the Englishman, only Lionel Messi had managed to score more than 70 goals in a single season: in 2011/12, the Argentine reached an incredible 73. That season, Barcelona won only the Copa del Rey, but the greatness of his individual performances was still rewarded with the Ballon d’Or, the fourth of his eight extraordinary wins.
And it is precisely this precedent that further strengthens the 2026 verdict. Kane reached goalscoring heights reserved for the greatest players in history, combining them with trophies and consistently elite performances. The Ballon d’Or, then, is not simply the crowning achievement in the career of one of his generation’s best centre-forwards, but the inevitable recognition of a season that, by the numbers, belongs in football history.
