President Donald Trump said Sunday that the US trade dispute with Canada would end soon, but offered no timetable or terms for resolving the tariff standoff. Speaking at an October 25 rally in Port Huron, Michigan, Trump defended higher duties on Canadian goods and claimed Ottawa was ready to make concessions. His remarks came as Canada pursued closer European ties to reduce its reliance on the American market.
The rally aimed to support Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Meanwhile, Canada's government gave no immediate response to Trump's latest prediction.
Trump Defends Canadian Tariffs and Predicts a Settlement
Trump repeated his charge that Canada had treated the United States unfairly in trade. He also told supporters that the dispute would be settled fairly soon, without identifying an agreement or describing any talks.
His comments carried particular weight in Port Huron, a border community linked to cross-border commerce. Trump won more than 66% of the vote in the surrounding area during the 2024 presidential election. Yet the tariff dispute has also affected Michigan's economy, including the Detroit auto industry.
Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, who faces Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, has sought distance from Trump's auto tariff policy. On Sunday, Rogers credited the tariffs with helping secure manufacturing investment by Chevrolet and Detroit Diesel.
Still, Rogers expressed concern about duties on Canadian vehicles and auto-related trade. In remarks to Meet the Press, he said the policy contained benefits alongside issues that still needed work.
Canada Turns Toward Europe as US Trade Pressure Continues
While Trump forecast a settlement, Prime Minister Mark Carney continued efforts to expand Canada's economic options abroad. His government has focused on Europe as a partner amid the risk of further US trade restrictions.
Carney has described Canada as closely aligned with Europe. The European Union has already included Canada in a defense procurement alliance and invited Canadian representatives to important EU meetings.
The EU also wants more reliable international partners in a world shaped by the United States and China. For Ottawa, the proposed plans cover student mobility, satellite services and possible broader security talks alongside existing defense cooperation with Brussels.
Timothy Snyder, who chairs modern European history at Toronto's Munk School of Global Affairs, said greater diversification could protect Canada against sudden limits on US market access. He also argued that wider partnerships could leave Canada better placed even if the trade conflict eased.
The relationship has also drawn a warning from Trump. He threatened to halt trade with the EU after the bloc proposed an associate member arrangement for Canada, calling the idea a hostile act.

EU Associate Status Proposal Draws Political Resistance
The proposed associate member status remains undefined in EU treaties. A draft joint declaration suggested Canada might join the Erasmus student exchange program or the Galileo satellite navigation program.
The draft also raised the prospect of Canadian participation in a proposed European security council. That council remains a concept rather than an established body.
German Member of the European Parliament Tobias Cremer Tobias Cremer has called for concrete commitments to move cooperation beyond friendly statements. However, opposition has emerged on both sides of the Atlantic.
French National Rally lawmaker Angeline Furet criticized current free trade with Canada over its effect on agriculture. The Canada-EU trade agreement, signed in 2016, calls for removing import duties on 98% of products, but full implementation remains incomplete. France is among the EU countries that have not implemented it.
In Canada, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre rejected the idea that closer European cooperation should alter the country's independence. He also referenced Trump's threats to make Canada the 51st US state while rejecting any prospect of becoming an EU state.
Final Thoughts
Trump expects the US-Canada trade dispute to ease soon, but he has offered neither a timetable nor specific terms. Michigan's auto industry continues to face tariff concerns as Carney pursues closer European cooperation. Meanwhile, political resistance in Canada and the EU complicates efforts to expand their relationship.
