Colombo, Oct 26 (Daily Mirror) - The Supreme Court today imposed a travel ban on former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and four others in connection with contempt of court proceedings initiated by Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) over their alleged failure to comply with orders issued by the Court in its judgment delivered on March 27, 2026.
The Controller General of Immigration and Emigration was directed to implement the travel ban forthwith.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court ordered the release on bail of four respondents, including Keheliya Rambukwella, the former Chairman and former Chief Executive Officer of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA), and the former Director of the Medical Supplies Division, upon furnishing bonds of Rs. 50 million each, with two sureties.
The three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, granted the five respondents three months from today to pay the respective sums they had been ordered to pay to the State.
The contempt application arose from the alleged failure of the five respondents to comply with the Supreme Court’s order to make payments to the State. In its judgment in case No. SC/FR/65/2023, the Supreme Court ordered former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella to pay Rs. 75 million to the State, while the other four respondents were each ordered to pay Rs. 50 million.
Senior Counsel Senany Dayaratne, together with Nishadi Wickramasinghe, Janani Thimaya Abeywickrema and Harshani Maheshika Bandara, instructed by Thushari Jayawardena, appeared for TISL.
