Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that two Lithuanian women that were declared missing last week have been detained in Iran and that efforts are underway to provide them with consular assistance.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs received official information from Iran on October 26 regarding the detention of Lithuanian citizens,” the ministry said in a comment to BNS.
The ministry said it could not provide details about the circumstances of the detentions but was seeking to “make arrangements to provide the detained individuals with the necessary consular assistance”.
It reiterated its recommendation that Lithuanian citizens avoid traveling to Iran and urged those currently in the country to leave immediately.
Last week, Vilnius County police announced they were searching for two women born in 1992 and 1983 who had flown to Turkey in the first half of October and then travelled to Iran.
The women’s relatives have been unable to contact them since October 11. Their mobile phones have been switched off, they have not been active on social media, and they have been unreachable through other means.
The women had travelled abroad for tourism.
