Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Agriculture yesterday voiced concern over allegations of irregularities, political influence and bribery in the appointment of fertiliser dealers in several districts, and called for investigations and action if claims are proven.
The concerns were raised during a committee meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban that reviewed fertiliser stocks, distribution and dealer appointments.
According to meeting sources, at least three committee members alleged that fertiliser dealerships had been awarded to Awami League supporters in exchange for money. One opposition member claimed political affiliation had become the primary criterion for selecting dealers, sidelining experienced and qualified applicants.
Following the meeting, the committee recommended that allegations related to dealer appointments in Lalmonirhat, Barguna, Satkhira, Faridpur, Naogaon and Jashore be thoroughly examined and addressed.
Committee Chairman Shahadat Hossain Salim told reporters that the committee had asked the ministry to temporarily suspend fertiliser dealerships in places where specific allegations had surfaced.
“Necessary steps would be taken if allegations against anyone were proved within three months,” he said.
The committee also recommended that dealership agreements yet to be signed remain on hold until complaints are resolved. Where agreements have already been signed, the allegations should be properly investigated and appropriate action taken, according to a Parliament Secretariat press release.
The chairman noted fertiliser stocks remain adequate, with supplies exceeding demand. The committee expressed satisfaction with the ministry’s briefing on fertiliser stocks and distribution.
The committee also formed a subcommittee to inspect fertiliser distribution, stock management and allegations of illegal hoarding and other irregularities.
Mostafizur Rahman was named convener of the subcommittee, with Md Rokon Uddin and Sabira Sultana serving as members.
