Alex Golesh opened Ole Miss week at his Monday press conference by describing a conversation he had with his Auburn players that morning. It came after a 38-17 home loss to No. 18 LSU that dropped Auburn to 4-3 and 2-3 in the SEC, the first lopsided defeat of Golesh’s first season on the Plains.
Byrum Brown completed 15 of 24 passes for 160 yards and was sacked six times, and Golesh did not dress up what he saw on film.
“We lacked detail as a whole on Saturday,” Golesh said.
“The margins are so tight. You don’t have to play perfect, but you’ve got to play really sound,” he added.
“We’ve had the ability to reset as this year’s gone. We’ve had to lick our wounds, come back and play good football … If we don’t, it’ll be a really long week. If we do, we’ve got an opportunity to go on the road and beat a really good football team,” Golesh said.
Auburn’s season backs up the first part of that message. The Tigers lost competitive games to Florida and Tennessee, and the week before LSU they went on the road and stunned then-No. 1 Georgia. The LSU game showed how quickly that kind of momentum can swing back.

Can Auburn reset again at Ole Miss?
Saturday’s trip to Oxford is Auburn’s fourth straight game against a ranked opponent, and Ole Miss returns home after rallying from a 24-3 halftime deficit at Texas only to lose 34-27 on a final-play interception in the end zone.
Golesh singled out the Rebels’ quarterback when he previewed the matchup. Trinidad Chambliss threw two touchdown passes to Horatio Fields in Austin, and Auburn’s coach did not hedge on how much of a problem he presents.
“Offensively, the quarterback is as special a player as there is,” Golesh said.
Auburn’s defense draws Chambliss after a game Golesh described as full of explosive plays allowed, quarterback scrambles and third-down failures. The offensive line that gave up six sacks to LSU and now faces what Golesh called a veteran defense.
A win in Oxford would move Auburn to 5-3 and 3-3 in the SEC. A loss would send the Tigers into November at 4-4.
