Ronaldo sold his 90% Cruzeiro stake in 2024 and bought a $7.8M Miami penthouse

In the high-stakes arena where elite sports ownership intersects with luxury global real estate, few figures command attention quite like Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima. Famously known across the globe as "O Fenômeno," the two-time World Cup winner has spent the last few years orchestrating a massive, multi-continental shift in his personal and professional portfolio.

Between April 2024 and March 2026, the legendary Brazilian striker completely overhauled his assets, pivotally transitioning out of grueling European and South American football club ownership to anchor himself in the ultra-luxury property market of South Florida. This financial evolution reached its crowning milestone on March 30, 2026. Public property records and official media announcements finalized that day confirmed that Ronaldo had completed the acquisition of a breathtaking waterfront penthouse in Miami’s exclusive Bay Harbor Islands for $7.8 million.

The transaction came exactly two years after he initiated a high-profile exit from his boyhood club, Cruzeiro, a timeline that underscores a deliberate pivot from the volatile boardrooms of sports management to the rock-solid stability of premier American real estate.

Shifting the Playbook: The divestment from football ownership

The foundation for Ronaldo’s new real estate venture was laid in late April 2024. In a move that shocked the South American football landscape, Ronaldo agreed to sell his controlling 90% stake in the embattled Brazilian club Cruzeiro to BPW Sports, officially announcing the deal across April 29 and 30.

Having originally stepped in during a period of acute crisis in 2021, Ronaldo had acquired the indebted club's soccer department for roughly $78 million through a public limited company framework known in Brazil as an SAF (Sociedade Anônima do Futebol).

By the time he walked away in 2024, he had negotiated a sale price reportedly hovering around $117 million.

Despite bringing structural stability, his tenure was far from easy.

Passionate Cruzeiro supporters frequently accused him of failing to inject the heavy capital investments they expected. Reflecting on his tumultuous but ultimately successful rescue mission during a press conference following the sale, Ronaldo did not mince words. "Cruzeiro was in intensive care when I came," he stated. "I halved the debts, the revenue increased five times.

I am leaving Cruzeiro in a comfortable hospital bedroom now."Addressing the fierce blowback from sections of the fanbase, O Fenômeno stood firm, adding, "Maybe some have exaggerated a little going against me, but this is irrelevant to me. I know most fans are grateful to me and my team for putting Cruzeiro back in the national and international scene. My goal was reached, that was always the idea. To bring Cruzeiro back and, at the right time, give it to the right person."Ronaldo was clear that this marked the end of a specific chapter, famously declaring at the time: "My answer will be a short one; Valladolid is next.

I will take some time off." True to his word, a year later on May 23, 2025, he concluded a six-year ownership tenure in Spain by selling his majority controlling stake in the second-division Spanish club Real Valladolid to a North American investment group, clearing his desk for a new chapter of global diversification.

The March 2026 acquisition in Bay Harbor Islands

Free from the round-the-clock administrative pressures of running two historic football franchises, Ronaldo directed his capital toward the booming South Florida market.

In March 2026, the transaction records revealed that the football legend had secured the ultimate trophy asset: the final developer-owned unit at Onda Residences, located at 1135 103rd Street.

The transaction was meticulously executed, closing through a managed Delaware limited liability company under Ronaldo's direct oversight. Originally listed on the multiple listing service for $8.7 million, the luxury duplex penthouse traded hands at an adjusted $7.8 million, breaking down to an impressive $1,500 per square foot.

The developers—industry titans Ugo Colombo of CMC Group and Valerio Morabito of Morabito Properties—were represented by luxury real estate agent Dina Goldentayer of Douglas Elliman, who dubbed Onda the “most luxurious building” ever built in the history of Bay Harbor Islands.

Inside the penhouse: $7.8 million of pure luxury

Ronaldo’s new residence is an architectural masterpiece designed for privacy, scale, and high-end living. Spanning just over 5,000 square feet of interior living space, the duplex layout boasts five expansive bedrooms and between 5.5 and 7 bathrooms, ensuring unparalleled comfort for guests and family.

The interior is characterized by the flawless Italian-level craftsmanship that defines Ugo Colombo's projects, highlighting custom premium cabinetry and precision stonework.Access to the home is highly secure, featuring a private elevator that opens directly into the primary living quarters as well as directly onto the roof. The outdoor amenities include the following features:

Why Onda? A boutique refuge from the skyline

What sets Ronaldo’s new home apart from the towering skyscrapers of downtown Miami or Sunny Isles is its deliberate embrace of low-density luxury.

Completed in 2024, Onda is a highly boutique, eight-story building containing just 41 total residences. Because Bay Harbor Islands enforces strict building height limits of seven to eight stories, the neighborhood avoids the disruptive shadow casting and intense traffic density found in taller coastal corridors. This creates a tranquil, European-style residential environment situated a mere 0.6 miles from the world-famous luxury retail destination, Bal Harbour Shops.

While larger towers force high-net-worth individuals to share pool decks and lounge spaces, Ronaldo’s duplex penthouse delivers an entirely private open-air oasis, a configuration that remains remarkably rare and difficult to replicate anywhere along the South Florida barrier islands.

The bigger picture: The global wealth migration to South Florida

Ronaldo’s $7.8 million acquisition is more than just a personal real estate purchase; it is a textbook case of international wealth preservation.

As real estate experts frequently note, wealthy global figures look to diversify beyond their home countries by converting corporate profits into strong, stable U.S. hard assets. South Florida has naturally evolved into the premier destination for this capital due to its accessibility, climate, and favorable lifestyle.By establishing his footprint at Onda Residences, Ronaldo joins a glittering modern migration of elite football wealth to the region, following the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and the Beckham family. Following Miami's star turn as a central host city for the concluded 2026 FIFA World Cup, O Fenômeno’s move ensures that the legendary striker remains exactly where he belongs: right in the center of the action of a true global soccer capital, resting comfortably in a masterfully curated sanctuary of luxury.
