Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) celebrated its 20th founding anniversary today with a procession and other programmes, outlining plans to expand its services through four additional police stations.
Barishal Divisional Commissioner Khalil Ahmed inaugurated the celebrations at 11am on 26 October, 2026, by releasing balloons and pigeons.
Speaking at the event, Khalil said population growth, urbanisation and increasing vehicle numbers were contributing to traffic congestion and crime. Police were working to address these challenges and bring services closer to residents, he added.
BMP Commissioner Abu Raihan Muhammad Saleh said the force had worked responsibly since its inception. It currently provides services through four police stations, with a proposal to increase the number to eight.
He said the planned expansion would help extend policing services to more city residents.
Following the inauguration, a procession led by the divisional commissioner paraded through major streets. A cake-cutting ceremony was later held at the BMP office.
Participants included Barishal Range Deputy Inspector General Zulfikar Ali Haider, Range Reserve Force Commandant and Additional Deputy Inspector General Abdus Salam Rimon, Mohammad Zakiul Karim, and 10 Armed Police Battalion Commanding Officer and Additional Deputy Inspector General Md Shahab Uddin.
Deputy Commissioner Md Mamun Khandakar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Md Abdul Hannan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Sushanta Sarkar, Barishal Press Club President Aminul Islam Khasru and former general secretary Kazi Miraj Mahmud also attended, alongside senior police officers and journalists from print and electronic media.
Barishal Metropolitan Police began operations on 26 October, 2006, and currently has 1,800 personnel.
