My Niece Found the Perfect Wedding Dress. Her Mom Is Having a Huge Fit.

Dear Pay Dirt,

My niece is getting married and stressing about the budget. They are paying for themselves. Luckily, my niece’s stepmom works at a wedding venue/community center where there is a focus on recycling and affordability. She took my niece and her fiancé over, and they got a lot of free or low price items for the wedding, including a wedding arch, table cloths, napkins, balloons, center pieces (so many mason jars with fairy lights), and a wedding dress. It’s the wedding dress that is turning out to be a problem.

A free dress meant my niece saved enough money so that she could afford her honeymoon. But my sister is foaming at the mouth about it. She says the stepmom stole her “magic moment” to pick out a wedding dress with her daughter. She’s posting on social media about “this bitch,” and now everyone is upset. My niece tells me she can’t sleep over this. I’ve met the stepmom, and she is fine. Maybe a bit religious for my tastes, but she is sincere and volunteers with refugees. She and her husband have a woman pastor. I very much doubt the woman was plotting in the corner to get a “gotcha” on my sister. She was just trying to save my niece some real money. I have repeatedly told my sister that she can just go with my niece to get the dress fitted or be there with her on the actual day when she does her hair and hair and make up.

Should I just shut up and stop trying to get her to step down? Or should I keep trying to have her see reason?

—Free Dress

Dear Free Dress,

You know the cliche: There’s no such thing as a free lunch. The payment here, unfortunately, is a pile of emotional distress for everyone. Worse, nothing you’ve said to your sister so far is working, and it may even be making it worse.

The real question is: Why is she so upset? Underneath the anger, I suspect she’s grieving the loss of a bridal milestone that’s one more step toward her daughter forming a new nuclear family with her fiancé. That opportunity is gone and, worse, her daughter’s stepmom got to experience it, cementing her own bond with your niece.

The fact that your niece saved money and her stepmom meant well is beside the point.

Meanwhile, the family is blowing up over this, which is going to make for a lousy wedding. And, that’s something your niece will neither forget nor forgive anytime soon. So if you decide to make one or two last attempts at peacemaking, make it about the social media posts, which are costing everyone more emotional distress. Ask your niece if her mother could help her choose a veil, shoes, jewelry, etc., and see if just listening to your sister vent, without commentary or telling her she’s wrong, will help ease her pain.

There are so many ways to make a wedding special and so many of these moments will be memorable for a lifetime. But not if your sister continues to fight what will likely be a losing battle.

Classic Prudie

My ex-wife and I were married for 14 years, and together for 20. We divorced amicably in 2019 but always held the intention that we’d stay friends. And we have! We work in the same office, have coffee once or twice a week, house-sit each other’s pets from time to time, etc. We’re both dating again, and both of our new partners have expressed some discomfort over our continued friendship.
