Development of the Goheung space launch vehicle national industrial complex, set to become the hub of South Korea's space industry ecosystem, is moving into full swing.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on the 27th that it had convened the Central Industrial Complex Planning Review Committee to review the plan for the Goheung space launch vehicle national industrial complex. The ministry aims to secure future growth engines by building a manufacturing and research base for space launch vehicles at the complex.
The Goheung complex is part of a national strategic project to make South Korea a space power. In March 2024, the government secured tenant demand by signing occupancy agreements with 11 core anchor companies and startups, including Hanwha Aerospace and Innospace. The Agency for Defense Development is also set to move in, working in tandem with the Defense Space Test Center being built near the complex.
Through the committee's review, the ministry finalized the industrial complex plan, which reflects the target industries to be attracted and the land use plan, and said it would ensure the complex is completed within the set timeframe. Compensation procedures will begin next year. The Central Industrial Complex Planning Review Committee is a body established to review industrial complex plans under the Industrial Sites and Development Act and the Special Act on Simplification of Industrial Complex Licensing Procedures.
Goheung County was designated as a space industry launch vehicle cluster in December 2022. With an industrial foundation for space launch vehicles centered on the Naro Space Center and research facilities linked to the Defense Space Test Center, the public and private sectors are expected to jointly build a space industry ecosystem. The complex is projected to generate 295.8 billion won (about $210 million) in production and create 1,673 jobs.
"The designation of the Goheung space launch vehicle national industrial complex is significant in that it creates synergy for nurturing the aerospace industry and secures future growth engines based on advanced industries," said Park Ji-hong, head of the ministry's Land and Urban Policy Office. "We will work closely with nearby industrial and research institutions such as the Naro Space Center, the private launch site and the Defense Space Test Center to ensure the Goheung complex is successfully developed."
