Overview:
AI and robotics are helping farmers automate fieldwork, monitor crop health, and improve precision in spraying and harvesting.
Companies are developing solutions for labor shortages, targeted weed control, livestock management, and more efficient use of agricultural inputs.
The long-term value of agricultural automation depends on reliable performance, practical farm conditions, and costs that farmers can justify.
AI and robotics are changing how farms run. Tractors can now handle fieldwork without a driver. Sprayers can target a single weed instead of a whole row. Robots can pick delicate fruit without damaging it. These tools exist because farms face real pressure.
Workers are harder to find. Input costs keep rising. Weather has grown harder to predict. Companies are building systems that automate routine tasks, track crop health, and cut down on unneeded chemical use.
But none of that matters if the tools fail in the field. In 2026, the real test is simple. Do these systems work well, hold up under daily use, and earn back what they cost.
Automating the Machinery Farmers Already Own
John Deere has pushed automation into daily field work. Its See and Spray systems use cameras to tell crops apart from weeds. This lets fields get treated selectively instead of spraying everything the same way. Modern Deere tractors also gather field data through onboard sensors. Select models can even till the land without a driver present.
Kubota takes a wider approach. Instead of building one flagship machine, it automates several farming stages at once. Its lineup includes autonomous rice transplanters, automated tractor technologies, and field-monitoring tools. All of these connect through its Smart Agri System. The company has also started extending that platform into Europe through local partnerships.
AGCO has made retrofitting its main strategy. Its PTx Trimble OutRun kit mounts onto an existing tractor and turns it into a driverless unit. That tractor can then pull a grain cart at harvest or run tillage with no operator in the cab.
The system reached full commercial launch on Fendt 900 and 1000 series tractors this year. This means farmers can automate machines they already own instead of buying new ones. AGCO also showed off SymphonyVision, an AI system that spots individual weeds and directs spraying. It ran on a Rogator sprayer at AGCO’s October 2026 technology event.
Blue River Technology, now part of John Deere, laid the early groundwork for this shift. Its plant-recognition software proved that a camera could tell one plant from another with enough precision to guide targeted spraying. That approach became the backbone of the selective spraying systems now built into Deere’s equipment.
Making Every Chemical Application Count
However, Carbon Robotics approaches weed control in a unique way. Their machines employ AI vision to locate each weed and eliminate it using a laser instead of an herbicide. This method eliminates the possibility of developing resistance for the weed to the herbicide used by the machine when it comes to the weeds that it can identify.
On the other hand, Ecorobotix utilizes this precision in spraying. It uses AI to detect individual plants and spray only those that require spraying. However, this depends on the crops, the spraying used, and the field conditions.
Watching Crops and Livestock Closer Than Ever
The Taranis system detects the issues early. Using an aerial imagery platform coupled with AI analytics, it detects pest damage, diseases, or nutrient deficiencies on a field-by-field basis. Farmers don't have to monitor all sections in the same manner. The results of the analysis will allow them to focus only on the relevant ones.
The Aerobotics approach becomes more precise and is applied to individual trees. This aspect is important in orchards and vineyards, where one tree can differ greatly from the one located nearby. Using its drones and image analytics, it marks the signs of stress for a further inspection by the farmer.
The Lely system makes the same shift but applies it to indoor farming. Using robotic milking systems, cows can be milked individually when they want to, while the sensors will detect the health condition and productivity of each animal. Thus, dairy farms can organize the labor better and solve some problems earlier.

Taking On Labor That Machines Could Not Touch
Dogtooth Robotics constructs robots that are used in picking strawberries, fruits that have always been regarded as impossible to harvest using machines due to their delicate nature. The fruit is different in terms of its ripeness, size, positioning, and delicacy, making it difficult to automate.

Final Thought
The key to the future success of agricultural robots will be the company that provides consistent results and savings at a cost that the farmer can justify. The demonstration itself is just the beginning. Ultimately, it will all boil down to whether or not they deliver.

FAQs
1. What does AI actually do on a farm?
It helps machines see and decide. Cameras and sensors spot weeds, check crop health, and guide tractors, so farmers can treat problems with more precision instead of guessing.
2. Are autonomous tractors already in use, or still in testing?
Some are already working on real farms. Systems like AGCO's OutRun have moved past trials and reached full commercial launch on select tractor models this year.
3. Do these technologies replace farm workers?
Not entirely. Most systems take over repetitive or labor-heavy tasks, such as spraying, milking, or picking fruit, which frees up workers for other jobs rather than removing them completely.
4. How much do these tools cut down on chemical use?
It varies by crop, field, and treatment. Tools like laser weeding and targeted spraying aim to apply chemicals only where needed, but exact savings depend on local conditions.
5. Why are retrofit systems, like AGCO's OutRun, gaining attention?
They let farmers automate tractors they already own instead of buying new equipment, which lowers the cost of adopting autonomy.
