Pope says stop preparing for more wars, only peace is holy

(ANSA) - ROME, 27 OTT - Pope Leo XIV said in a video message to an Assisi peace meeting Tuesday that countries must stop preparing for more wars, and that only peace is holy. "We must rebuild peace everywhere, not prepare for more wars! War can never be waged in the name of God! For us believers, 'fighting in the name of religion actually means striking at religion itself.' There is no such thing as a holy war: only peace is holy!" was the impassioned plea issued by the Pope in a video message sent to participants at the international meeting "Unarmed and Disarming Peace," held in Assisi. "Precisely in these times, characterized by a culture of power," he added, "there is a need to foster the 'spirit of Assisi'—which entails rejecting any religious justification for war, and embracing a spirit of mediation and dialogue."
