Windows 11 Preps For Intel Nova Lake With A New CPU Performance Toggle

Self-described "feline fan" and longtime Windows Insider Xeno (@XenoPanther on X) has spotted a curious new toggle in Microsoft's Windows 11 Experimental builds that seems to let users enable Intel APX, an upcoming instruction set extension expected to arrive with Intel's Nova Lake processors. The setting, found under Windows' Developer options, promises better performance, although it's not yet clear why Microsoft is apparently making APX an explicit opt-in rather than enabling it automatically when supported hardware becomes available.

Intel's APX, short for "Advanced Performance Extensions," is a significant expansion of the x86-64 instruction set. One of its biggest changes is a doubling of the number of GPRs, or "general-purpose registers," from 16 to 32. This gives compilers more room to keep data close at hand instead of shuffling it between registers and memory. APX also brings along the usual bundle of extra instructions intended to improve performance in specific scenarios or for specific workloads.

Now, APX isn't available in any shipping processors yet, so the toggle in the Experimental build doesn't do anything at the moment. It's not even clear it's actually hooked up to anything as of right now. The ISA extension will debut with Intel's upcoming Nova Lake CPU family, which we know to be branded the "Core Ultra 4000" series. That makes Microsoft's early work on APX support pretty interesting as Intel's next-generation desktop processors creep closer to launch.

What's less clear is why Windows needs a toggle for the feature at all. Processor instruction set extensions generally aren't exposed as user-facing switches. Windows can identify supported instructions through the processor's CPUID information and configure the necessary operating-system support, while applications and compilers determine whether to actually use those instructions; that's how things have always worked with extensions such as AVX and TSX.

I have some ideas as to why there's a toggle, though. APX introduces an additional architectural register state that the operating system has to manage, so Microsoft's implementation will need to account for that state when shuffling threads around. An explicit opt-in could give developers and testers a way to exercise the new implementation before Microsoft enables it by default. The switch could also provide a compatibility workaround if certain low-level software (like, say, kernel-level anti-cheat) barfs with APX enabled.

With all of that said, the setting's presence doesn't mean that end-users will have to enable APX manually when compatible chips arrive. It might simply be a temporary development control that disappears before the feature reaches production Windows builds. That timing is worth watching, by the way; Intel's Nova Lake processors have had multiple leaks already pointing to the upcoming lineup. An announcement at or around CES 2027, now less than three months away, would fit the expected launch window. If that schedule holds, Microsoft has relatively little time left to finish preparing Windows for APX before the first compatible systems reach consumers.
