Some people are into abs. Others have a thing for hands. And then there are the people who see a particularly nice pair of feet and think, Yeah, I'd hit that.
For people with foot fetishes, toes, arches, soles, and even a well-placed pair of heels can be major turn-ons. And while, yes, foot fetishes have become something of an internet punchline, they're actually among the most widely recognized fetishes out there.
Now, just like shoes, having a foot fetish isn’t one-size-fits-all (heh), and it can mean different things to different people. Some get turned on by the appearance of feet, while others enjoy foot massages, toe sucking, foot worship, or incorporating feet into sex. “They are just one of myriad ways that erotic desire and titillation is expressed,” explains Ruby Rare, intimacy expert at Feeld. “Foot fetishes are totally healthy!”
But why do people have foot fetishes in the first place? And if you're curious about exploring one yourself (or with a partner who's into them), where do you start? Here's what sex experts want you to know about foot fetishes, from what they are and why they develop to the different ways people enjoy them.
What Is a Foot Fetish?
As you might have guessed, a foot fetish is a sexual attraction to feet that goes beyond simply appreciating a nice pedicure or enjoying the occasional foot rub. For someone with a foot fetish, feet can play a significant role in their sexual arousal, whether that means looking at them, touching them, or incorporating them into sexual activities.
“Put simply, a foot fetish is the practice of deriving sexual pleasure from feet,” explains Rare. She notes that while a kink is a sexual interest or activity that adds to someone's pleasure, a fetish involves a stronger, more specific attraction to a particular body part, object, or scenario. For some people, that element may even be necessary for arousal.
Foot fetishes are also among the most commonly studied and discussed sexual fetishes. A 2007 study published in the International Journal of Impotence Research examined more than 5,000 people across online fetish communities and found that feet and foot-related objects were among the most common fetish interests. (However, because the study focused on people already participating in fetish communities, it doesn't tell us how prevalent foot fetishes are in the general population. So do with that what you will!).f
No matter its popularity, sex and relationships expert at MYLO Lisa Opel says that having a foot fetish “isn’t inherently unhealthy, and having a strong fetish doesn’t automatically make it a disorder.” A fetish generally becomes a concern when it causes significant distress, interferes with daily life, or involves someone who hasn't consented. Otherwise? Nothing wrong with knowing what turns you on.
Why Do People Have Foot Fetishes?
So, why are some people turned on by feet while others couldn't care less about what's happening below someone's ankles? There's no single scientific explanation for why foot fetishes develop, but researchers and sex experts have a few theories.
“Sexual arousal is very good at making associations,” says Opel. “If feet, shoes, smell, touch, or a particular power dynamic become linked with excitement or pleasure, that connection can strengthen over time.”
There's also the appeal of something that's usually kept hidden. Rare suggests that because feet are often covered, revealing them can carry a certain erotic excitement. She also points to the association between feet and dirt, explaining that some people may find pleasure in turning something typically considered unclean or taboo into a source of sexual arousal.
Now, you may have heard the theory that foot fetishes develop because the areas of the brain that process sensations in the feet and genitals are located near each other. While it's a popular explanation, Opel says research hasn't really supported it. But hey! It’s a fun theory!
And if you've only recently discovered that feet turn you on, that's not unusual either. Sexual interests can evolve over time, whether through new experiences, relationships, or simply becoming more comfortable exploring what feels good.
What Are the Different Types of Foot Fetishes?
Not all foot fetishes look the same. Some people are turned on by the sight of bare feet, while others are more interested in what they can actually do with them.
Visual Attraction and Footwear
For some people, the attraction is all about appearances. Think specific toe shapes, high arches, painted toenails, or feet in heels, stockings, and socks. As Rare explains, foot fetishes can involve preferences for certain physical characteristics, as well as whether feet are clean, dirty, or sweaty. Sometimes, simply looking at feet is enough to get someone going.
Foot Worship and Sensory Play
Foot worship involves showing admiration or desire for someone's feet, often through activities like kissing, licking, massaging, or caressing them. Some people also enjoy toe sucking (sometimes called shrimping), while others are particularly turned on by the smell or feel of feet.
For some, the appeal is less about the feet themselves and more about the experience. As Lisa Finn, sex educator at Babeland, explains, it might be “the service, care, and/or intimacy of providing a foot massage to a partner,” or even “the musky smell of feet that's the turn-on.”
Footjobs and Sexual Stimulation
A footjob involves using one or both feet to stimulate someone's genitals, typically through rubbing or stroking. Depending on what feels good, this might involve using the soles, toes, or arches to create different sensations. Foot play can also be incorporated into masturbation or partnered sex without necessarily involving direct genital stimulation.
BDSM and Power Dynamics
Foot fetishes can also overlap with BDSM, particularly when it comes to dominance and submission. “Foot fetishes can often be linked to power dynamics as well,” Finn says. She points to activities like cleaning a partner's feet, kneeling before them, or incorporating foot worship into a submissive role.
Other forms of foot-related BDSM play include trampling, in which one partner steps on another. Because this involves pressure and body weight, it's important to discuss boundaries and safety precautions beforehand.
How to Explore a Foot Fetish
Curious about dipping your toes (sorry) into foot play? Whether you've recently discovered a foot fetish or you're interested in exploring a partner's, you don't have to start with anything particularly adventurous. First, figure out what specifically turns you on.
If you're exploring solo, pay attention to the foot-related fantasies, images, or sensations that excite you. Maybe you're into the look of feet in heels, the idea of giving someone a foot massage, or having your own feet touched. You don't have to try every type of foot play to figure out what you like.
If you're exploring with a partner, Opel recommends starting with something simple, like a foot massage, kissing or caressing your partner's feet, or incorporating shoes and stockings into sex. “Start with the bit you already know you like,” she advises. “No need to go from ‘nice ankles’ to a full ceremonial foot altar by bedtime.”
Before introducing foot play into your sex life, though, have a conversation about it. Rare recommends being honest about what interests you, sharing any insecurities you might have, and giving your partner time to ask questions or decide whether they'd like to participate. And if they're not interested? That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with your desires. As Rare explains, “We all have different preferences, and it's okay for some of our desires to be practiced with partners and some to be things that we explore in different ways on our own.”
A few hygiene and safety considerations are worth keeping in mind, too. Opel recommends washing and drying feet beforehand, keeping toenails smooth, and avoiding mouth-to-foot or foot-to-genital contact if there are cuts, warts, or signs of a fungal infection. Lubricant can help prevent uncomfortable friction during genital stimulation. And if you're interested in more intense activities like trampling, discuss boundaries and intensity beforehand, avoid vulnerable areas of the body, and remember that consent to one type of foot play doesn't automatically mean consent to everything else.
