It’s an incredible honor when you’re inducted into an NFL team’s Hall of Fame. It’s a little weird when you’re the owner and you do it yourself. In the midst of an awful season and questions swirling about the Eagles’ future, owner Jeffrey Lurie is giving himself a nice little mid-season victory lap.
On Monday the Eagles announced that Lurie would be entering the team’s Hall of Fame, complete with an extensive quote by Lurie himself.

Lurie has been a fantastic owner since he took over the Eagles in 1994. He has done amazing work in the community and helped steward the team to two Super Bowl wins over the last decade. Still, putting yourself in the team Hall of Fame is really on the nose. There’s no doubt this was a move with an eye cast to the future. Lurie recently turned 75 — and men of a certain age get existential about how they’ll be remembered. When you’re a billionaire with the power to make things happen, you become desperate to erect monuments to yourself, leave a mark, grappling with the realization that you might be gone soon.
Does Lurie belong in the Eagles Hall of Fame? Definitely. Is he the man to enshrine himself? No. Let’s be real, nobody should go to the effort of giving themself a pat on the back. The team will eventually bounce to his kids, or be sold off — and there could easily be a succession clause that asks for him to be honored by the Eagles. It would be wholly deserved then.
Making a big statement about how honored you are to enter a Hall of Fame for a team you own — especially during a season that is going down in flames. Not exactly the best optics.
