The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says its time-window strategy for managing articulated vehicles along the Nyanya corridor of Abuja has helped prevent crashes involving the vehicles since its introduction in March.
The Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), FRSC, Mr Osondu Ohaeri, disclosed this in an interview on Sunday in Abuja.
Ohaeri explained that the strategy was introduced in response to recurring crashes involving articulated vehicles along the busy Abuja corridor.
He said the corps adopted the measure under the guidance of the Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, to reduce risks associated with the movement of heavy-duty vehicles during peak traffic periods.
“The arrangement operates between 4pm and 9pm, when traffic congestion is usually high.
“The Corps has not recorded any crash involving articulated vehicles, including petroleum tankers, along the corridor between the introduction of the strategy in March till date,” he said.
Ohaeri described the outcome as an indication that targeted traffic management, combined with enforcement and public enlightenment, could help reduce road traffic crashes.
He said the strategy was particularly important along corridors where heavy-duty vehicles operate alongside large numbers of commuters.
He explained that during the designated period, articulated vehicles were guided to remain on the hard shoulder while FRSC personnel engage their drivers in road safety education.
He said that the initiative was intended to reduce interaction between slow-moving heavy-duty vehicles and other road users during rush hour, while giving drivers an opportunity to receive safety guidance
“The vehicles are allowed to rejoin the main carriageway after the peak period, when traffic has eased,” he said.
He, however, stressed that the intervention did not remove the need for drivers to maintain their vehicles properly and comply with speed limits and other traffic regulations.
He identified speeding, driver fatigue and driving against traffic as persistent violations that could undermine road safety if not effectively addressed.
