If you’ve ever left the house in a jacket that, yes, looks the part but doesn’t exactly keep the cold at bay, you’re most certainly not alone. It’s come up more than a few times at the Highsnob office this week, which is usually a pretty reliable sign that the weather’s about to get sh*t. Not exactly riveting stuff, we know, but worth discussing when a rain jacket won’t cut it and a puffer is still very much out of the question.
Enter the ever-practical liner. If you’re not familiar with the term (I wasn’t until recently), it’s essentially a piece of outerwear you wear underneath your outerwear. A lightweight body warmer, if you will. Usually quilted, usually black or some manly shade of army green, and more often than not, a little gorpy-looking.

Seeing as we can’t be the only ones caught out by the changing seasons, we’ve scoured the World Wide Web for our favorite liner pieces. You may not be ready to welcome winter, but let’s face it, your jacket’s been looking a little underqualified lately.
The Spenny One
Finding a liner vest that feels understated yet elevated is harder than it sounds. This MAN-TLE one strikes that balance, with a black waxed finish that gives it a little something without shouting about it. No unnecessary bells and whistles, no over-the-top gorpcore theatrics. Just a really good-looking vest that makes a strong case for leaving your jacket open whenever you can. Winter be damned.
The Steady One
A liner doesn’t have to be the most exciting thing in your wardrobe, but it should at least pull its weight. Universal Works’ take comes in black nylon, with a button-up front and down filling to give it a bit more oomph than your average cardigan. Trust me, it’s an easy one to throw under a jacket when the cold starts creeping in, or wear on its own when the sun finally decides to play nice.
The Quirky One
Barbour and A.P.C. getting together was always going to be a good thing for outerwear. And really, who doesn’t love a vest that looks fished out of your dad’s closet? The patchwork on this one gives it a bit of mismatched charm, with just enough going on to make the simplest of fits feel a little more special.
The Sophisticated One
Contrary to belief, not every liner needs to be black and boring. Goldwin’s take has a crinkled finish that gives it a bit more personality, without going overboard. It’s a little more interesting than your average padded layer, which is really all you can ask for from something that’s meant to sit underneath your jacket.
The GI Joe One
I’ll admit, I’m usually more interested in what goes over a vest than the vest itself. TAION once again makes a decent case for changing that, though. The military-style quilting and oversized snaps give it a bit more personality than your standard padded layer, and the cropped, no-fuss shape means it doesn’t need much else going on. Sometimes the simplest pieces end up getting the most action.
The Teddy One
If there’s one thing better than a warm layer, it’s one that feels like smuggling your favorite blanket under your jacket. The wool on this liner gives it that soft, cozy appeal that makes getting dressed on a cold morning slightly less offensive. And while it’s comfortable enough to make you question why you bother with anything else, it’s still smart enough to look like you made an effort. Funny how that works.
The Hard-Wearing One
We’re not saying your current jacket has let you down, but if you’ve started shivering on the walk to the office, it might be time for a rethink. This insulated jacket has that quilted, slightly retro look that makes layering a lot more interesting than just piling on another hoodie. Plus, it’s black, so you can get away with wearing it with pretty much anything you own.
The "Quiet" One
Lemaire’s vest looks like it belongs to that hush-hush luxury movement, you know the one everyone’s supposedly moved on from but still can’t quite quit. The brown quilted cotton blend and button front give it a more dressed-up feel than your usual nylon liner, without getting too precious about it. Ideal for sneaking a little old-money energy into your layering game, whether you’re ready to admit it or not.
The Cheap(er) One
There’s something quite nice about a vest that looks like it’s already lived a little. Zara’s washed finish and contrast topstitching give this one a slightly beat-up, workwear feel, which is a welcome change from the usual sea of shiny nylon. After all, not every liner needs to be ready for a downpour.
