Election Day 2026 is a day for democracy and a chance for unity - editorial

Israelis heading to the polls on Tuesday will be making choices shaped by three extraordinary years. The October 7 massacre, the wars that ensued, and the strain on families, soldiers, and communities have changed the questions voters are asking of their leaders.

Political disagreements have become deeply personal, and the next government will inherit decisions with consequences far beyond one Knesset term.

Even so, Election Day deserves a measure of joy.

Across Israel, citizens will walk into polling stations, choose a ballot, and exercise their democratic right. Some will vote with conviction, others with reservations.

First-time voters will join parents and grandparents who have cast ballots through decades of upheaval. The results will divide winners from losers, but the act of voting belongs to everyone.

The agenda waiting for the next government ranges from accountability for October 7 to Israel’s security and place in the world.

One of the next government’s first tests will be how to investigate the failures that allowed Hamas’s October 7 attack.

Demands for a state commission of inquiry have become a central election issue, particularly for bereaved families who want answers and accountability. The argument over the form of that investigation will not disappear when the votes are counted.

The dispute over haredi military service is equally consequential. After years of fighting and repeated reserve call-ups, the burden of service weighs heavily on many households. Parties remain divided over exemptions, enforcement, and the kind of draft legislation the next coalition should pursue. What leaders agree to in coalition talks will affect both the IDF and Israeli society.

Beyond Israel’s borders, decisions await on the future of Gaza and the peace plan intended to shape its recovery and security. Israelis must consider what arrangements could prevent Hamas from again threatening their communities, who should govern Gaza, and what role international partners should play.

The Palestinian question also remains unresolved. Debates over a possible Palestinian statehood, settlement expansion, and violence in the West Bank carry direct implications for Israel’s security and relations with its allies.

International pressure, including the threat or use of sanctions, adds another dimension to choices that cannot be postponed indefinitely.

This also explains why the ability to vote should inspire pride. After so much loss and uncertainty, Israelis still have the power to influence who will make those decisions. A citizen can fiercely disagree with a neighbor over Gaza, conscription, or the government’s record and still respect that neighbor’s equal place at the ballot box.

The Jerusalem Post also calls for a modest widening of the political camps and the formation of a broad Zionist government. Israel’s challenges demand leaders willing to work across familiar dividing lines.

Cooperation will require difficult compromises, but the next coalition should strive to represent a wider range of Israelis and offer the country a measure of stability.

That appeal should remain in voters’ minds beyond Election Day.

Once the ballots have been counted and the parties know how many seats they have won, the democratic marathon enters its next stage. Seat totals will establish the balance of power in the Knesset, but coalition negotiations will determine the priorities, partnerships, and commitments of the government that emerges.

The public should remain part of that conversation. Israelis can continue asking their elected representatives what they intend to do about an October 7 inquiry, military service, Gaza, and relations with the Palestinians and the wider world. They can make clear that a broad Zionist coalition, if it is achievable, should be pursued with seriousness and goodwill.

Results may come quickly; building a government will take longer. Its quality will be judged by the agreements reached and the decisions that follow, long after election-night speeches have faded.

For now, Israelis should allow themselves to enjoy the day. Bring children to the polling station. Talk with friends and relatives, including those voting differently. Appreciate the chance to participate in a national decision even when the outcome is uncertain.

Cast a ballot with hope, then keep paying attention as the next government takes shape.
