The availability of blood is crucial in times of crisis or war. That is why a blood supply project has been launched to ensure that the regions of the North Calotte can help each other in an emergency.
Sweden has been a member of the Nordic Health Preparedness Agreement since 2003, which governs cooperation between the Nordic countries in times of crisis and war. However, blood supplies have not been covered by the agreement.
"The goal is to be able to exchange blood between countries. This is difficult today, partly because the participating countries have different rules and legislation," Henrik Brännholm, chief emergency physician in the Norrbotten Region, tells SVT.
